Coursing like artwork through southeast Minnesota's steep bluffs and leafy hardwoods, the Whitewater River and its trout have inspired many an angler to play hooky from work or school. Home to brook, brown and rainbow trout, the 16-mile-long Whitewater is formed by the joining of its North, Middle and South forks. Though stocked by the DNR, some 80 percent of its trout are wild. Better yet: Whitewater State Park, through which the river flows, offers cathedral-like camping and picnicking settings.
