Northeast Minneapolis has long been the city's mini-Bohemia, but the area bordered by Central to Madison (east/west) and Broadway to 18th Ave. NE. (south/north) has become a beehive of new energy in the form of studios, microbreweries, boutiques and ethnic dining. The tomato-red chimney of the Broadway building (formerly the Land O' Nod mattress factory) beckons evening and weekend explorers to fuel up at Spyhouse Coffee or 612 Brew taproom. Open-studio Thursday nights is the perfect time to check out the nearby Solar Arts and Casket Arts buildings. When day-tripping around this not-too-gentrified 'hood, fun little surprises are just one railroad-bridge underpass away. northeastminneapolisartsdistrict.com
