Beyond the art, crowds come for the bands, DJ’s and drinks. Recently on Thursday, in the reception room, it was live music by Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles, and on the main floor it was DJ Jake Rudh. Forget those tame daytime strolls through the galleries — a night at the museum is the most exciting way to experience our best art institutions. All have entered the late-night game, but the grand dame of Twin Cities museums throws the most consistent soirees. Every Thursday night, see a different side of the MIA, especially this summer. The themed evenings include one dedicated to craft beer, another showcasing local bands, a Summer Party June 1 featuring Doomtree and Morris Day & the Time and, of course, the popular Bike Night on July 18. OK, the MIA doesn't stay up super-late (Thursdays go till 9 p.m.) but it knows how to party. The museum even has its own beer sponsor (cheers, Summit!). 2400 3rd Av. S., Mpls.; 612-870- 3000, artsmia.org
