Malamanya (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

Cuban son and samba music spiked in popularity across United States in the early 2000s thanks to the all-star group Buena Vista Social Club, and here in Minnesota it remains a hot commodity — probably for the escapist visions of palm trees, daiquiris and swirling summer skirts it provides on winter days. This hodgepodge sextet of young musicians with roots from Puerto Rico, Haiti and Mexico (but none actually Cuban) tapped into that demand over the past couple of years, going from a weekly gig at the Driftwood Char Bar in south Minneapolis to recent shows at Walker Art Center and the Cedar Cultural Center. Singer Adriana Rimpel has a sultry, soaring voice, and the rest of the band plays sophisticated, tight, acoustic dance music that goes well beyond the cha-cha. malamanya.com
