Big bass -- Grant Kirt, 11, of Maple Grove, caught this 24-inch largemouth bass from the dock on Lower Whitefish Lake. He landed it by himself, without a net. He released the fish.

On a summer night deep in the heart of Minnesota's resort country, stop in the town of Crosslake at Moonlight Bay, a onetime dance hall originally built in 1933, and now a restaurant and bar with outside seating for, well, lots. You'll meet boatloads of bass anglers after tournament fishing — each looking for (and often finding) 3-, 4- and 5-pound bucketmouth bass.
