People who are new to the Twin Cities, especially those from bigger cities, will appreciate the thoughtful and unusual design at the Brunsfield North Loop, which stands out in a crowded field of buildings that share many visual similarities. Designed by Snow Kreilich Architects, it's also one of the few buildings where residents can — for a fee — choose their own paint colors. The building hosts regular socials, plus it's situated in a rapidly changing neighborhood where you won't be the only person new to town. If you're an international transplant, you might appreciate this little tip regarding our runner-up in this category: Across town near the University of Minnesota campus, 7 West caters to a global clientele with several cool features, including a Tea House lounge. And the building was designed with the sage advice of a feng shui master. 915 Washington Av. N., Mpls.; 612-339-9898; brunsfieldnorthloop.com

Runner-up: 7 West
