Behind the buzz: Black Kids

Who are they? A multiracial, co-ed ensemble from Jacksonville, Fla., that blends Cure and New Order synth-pop with the hyper, cheerleader style of the Go! Team and Pipettes.

Why the buzz? After getting picked as one of Rolling Stone's 10 new artists to watch in 2008, the quintet landed a slot at Coachella last weekend and is also down for the Glastonbury and Lollapalooza fests. Its debut EP, "Wizard of Ahhs," was a popular download on MySpace.

What do we think? Lovable frontman Reggie Youngblood comes off like Ducky from "Pretty in Pink" in the group's giddy, irrepressible single, "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" (next line: "He's got two left feet and he bites my moves"). The rest of its EP is equally energetic and almost as charming -- only four songs, mind you, but plenty of other current buzz bands don't even have that many on their full-length debuts.

When's the gig? 9 p.m. Tue., 7th Street Entry, opening for Cut Copy.
