BEACONS IN THE NIGHT

Matt Thompson's five favorite public neon signs:

• The Grain Belt Beer billboard on the northeast side of the Hennepin Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis: "The colorful graphics and the sheer scale of the porcelain and neon sign make it a true landmark. Even though it's not working, I would love to be involved in bringing it back to life."

• The Gold Medal Flour sign on the Minneapolis riverfront: "I appreciate the fact that this sign, which has significance to our history, has been saved. It's pretty basic, but that's what I find cool about it."

• The neon steamboat on Riverplace's skyway in Minneapolis: "The use of neon design in the water and smoke and the overall design have made it a longtime eye-catcher."

• The State Theatre marquee on Hennepin Avenue: "A classic display of neon and light bulbs. The multicolored display has a wonderful, colorful, old-time display."

• Lou's Fish House in Two Harbors, Minn.: "It has a great look with a hand-painted lake trout and neon outline. The basic details catch your eye while heading north. They also have a funky neon fish sign in the front window."
