We use our bathrooms every day to clean up and get ready for the day ahead. Consider returning the favor and give your bathroom a well-deserved scrub and practical facelift.

A fresh, clean, updated bathroom can be done on a budget and will increase not only the value of your home but also the value of the time you spend in that room.

First, winnow the clutter. Go through drawers and bins and get rid of things you haven't used in years and are perhaps not even useful anymore: "miracle" face creams that didn't deliver, the home hair dye kit you were afraid to try, jars of dried-out moisturizer. If there are things you just can't part with but rarely use, put them in a clear plastic container with a lid to give your bathroom a clean, organized look.

Once the bathroom has been cleared of useless items, think about painting or wallpapering the room for a fresh look. There are semi-gloss paints that are made especially for bathrooms and kitchens that are easy to clean and are mold- and mildew-resistant. Bathroom humidity tends to make wallpaper peel at the seams, but if you're intent on the look of wallpaper, there are adhesives at home stores that patch up those droopy seams. You can also consider painting the bathroom cabinets for a new look.

An acrylic bathtub or tub liner can be installed to refresh an old tub at less cost and hassle than replacement.

New countertops make a bathroom feel cutting-edge. Granite is long-lasting, stain-resistant and beautiful, and because bathroom countertops are usually small, you can find small cuts at low prices. If money is tight, imitation porcelain marble is your best choice for a gorgeous bathroom at low cost.

Fixtures can be inexpensive to update. Replace the old faucets with new ones and you'll have a fresh look without hurting your wallet.

Finish your new look with coordinating accessories: Fluffy absorbent towels, soap dishes, throw rugs and shower curtains all help renew the look of an old bathroom.
