Baker Mayfield contacts rookie Daniel Jones to explain quotes

Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield did some scrambling off the field Wednesday.

Claiming his words from an interview conducted four months ago were taken out of context, Mayfield said he contacted New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones about some biting comments.

A GQ article published Tuesday quoted Mayfield indicating he was shocked the Giants drafted Jones out of Duke with the No. 6 pick and questioned why the team would take a player without a record of winning.

Mayfield acknowledged he told GQ that the choice of Jones "blows my mind" but that he didn't mean any disrespect toward Jones. Mayfield said he texted Jones to say that.

"I reached out to Daniel because all that stuff was blown way out of hand," Mayfield said.

"What people didn't realize, the conversation entailed of me saying I was surprised I was drafted No. 1 overall and then me going on a rant after that about QB evaluation and the frustration from the college recruiting process. And so it had nothing to do with Daniel specifically about the winning and stuff."

Raiders going globe-trotting

The Oakland Raiders will begin their worldwide tour Thursday, when they play a "home" preseason game in Winnipeg that will start them toward becoming the first NFL team to play in three countries in one season.

The Raiders will take on Green Bay on Thursday and will be the home team for a game in London against Chicago on Oct. 6.

"We have to respond to a tough schedule," coach Jon Gruden said of Thursday's game. "We are going to fly a lot of hours this year, and we are going to play home games in foreign countries. It doesn't sound right, but that's the facts."

Copeland suspended

New York Jets linebacker Brandon Copeland was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

In a post on Instagram, Copeland said he used a supplement he believed adhered to NFL rules and hinted he planned to appeal.
