OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Athletics are bringing up former Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito.
The A's announced Wednesday that they will purchase Zito's contract from Triple-A Nashville. They cleared a roster spot by placing righthander Jesse Chavez on the 60-day disabled list with a broken rib.
Zito returned to the A's with a minor league contract this season but spent the entire year in Nashville, where he went 8-7 with a 3.46 ERA. He last pitched for the A's in Game 1 of the 2006 AL championship series against Detroit and has not pitched in the majors since 2013 with San Francisco.
Zito won the 2002 AL Cy Young with Oakland and went 102-63 with a 3.53 ERA over seven seasons with the A's.
