Ask tax preparers about outsourcing

January 15, 2010 at 11:37PM

Q Is it true that if I use a tax preparation service like H&R Block, my taxes will be sent overseas and done there?

A H&R Block prepares U.S. client tax returns only within the United States, said Dustin Ferguson, a company spokesman.

However, tax preparation companies can, and some apparently do, outsource tax returns to India. They're supposed to inform clients of this practice, and can do that in a form clients sign. It's important that you read these forms carefully. If you prefer that your taxes not be prepared overseas, ask your tax preparer directly if that might happen with your return.

More on oven doors A recent column asked readers for suggestions on what works to clean greasy glass oven doors. The majority of readers suggested using a single-sided razor blade, to carefully scrape the door and then clean as you would any glass.

A glass stovetop cleaner was the second most common response. Most suggested using it along with a no-scratch cleaning pad. Weiman's Glass Cook Top Cleaner was one brand suggested, and it's available at hardware and home stores such as Target.

Here are some other suggestions:

• The orange hand degreaser available in the auto parts section at Fleet Farm. With just a paper towel, it will also clean wood stove doors.

• Conditioning Glass Cleaner for Stove, Grill and Hearth, by Rutland. Look for it at fireplace supply stores or online.

• Magic Eraser cleaners available at home and hardware stores, as well as many grocery stores.

Note: It's always best to read the owner's manual for cleaning the stove. Also be very careful not to get cleansers inside of the glass door. If water or cleansers get between the glass panels, you won't be able to get at them and may need a new oven door.
