Jacksonville Jaguars fire vice-president of football operations Tom Coughlin

The Jacksonville Jaguars fired Tom Coughlin as executive vice president of football operations, parting ways with the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach a little more than a day after the NFL Players Union took a sledgehammer to his reputation.

Owner Shad Khan made the announcement Wednesday, saying he decided earlier this season that Coughlin would be gone at the end of the season. Khan said he reconsidered the timing in "recent days."

The 73-year-old architect who built the team from the ground up the first time, then revived it upon his return in 2017 after leading the New York Giants to two titles, was on the firing line because of a sagging record, questionable roster moves and, most recently, an arbitrator's decision to undo millions in fines imposed by Coughlin himself.

The NFLPA said Monday that more than 25% of player grievances filed in the past two years have been against the Jaguars.

The union's take: "You as players may want to consider this when you have a chance to select your next club."

... Bengals receiver A.J. Green won't play in the team's last two games because he said he hasn't fully recovered from ankle surgery during training camp.

... Buccaneers Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans and safety Jordan Whitehead will miss the remainder of the season because of hamstring injuries.

... The Bears placed inside linebacker Danny Trevathan on injured reserve because of a left elbow injury.

... The Titans placed kicker Ryan Succop on injured reserve (leg) and signing Greg Joseph off Carolina's practice squad.

... Daniel Jones probably will return as the Giants' starting quarterback after missing two games because of a sprained right ankle.

...The Raiders placed Trent Brown (pectoral tear) on season-ending injured reserve.

... The Panthers are preparing to start rookie quarterback Will Grier on Sunday against the Colts, replacing the struggling Kyle Allen.

Boston will pay a Red Sox record $13.4 million luxury tax after failing to make the playoffs and the Yankees finished with a $6.7 million bill, likely a fraction of what they will pay next year.

Three teams owe tax, according to end of year figures sent to clubs. The Cubs must pay $7.6 million following a season that ended with September fade and no postseason berth.

'Remember the Titans' coach dies

Herman Boone, the title-winning, tough-as-nails Virginia high school football coach, portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 2000 biopic "Remember the Titans," died Wednesday.

Boone was 84 years old. No cause of death was revealed, reported Washington-area outlet WPGC News.

He assumed the football head coach position at Virginia's T.C. Williams High School in 1971 — the year Alexandria city's high schools were integrated, according to USA Today.

During his first year at the helm, his Titans amassed a perfect 13-0 record en route to a state championship.
