Seattle knows how to celebrate Canada Day. Canadian James Paxton, the "The Big Maple" himself, was on the mound for the Mariners, and it also was Paxton Bobblehead Day at Safeco Field.

This bobblehead included a bald eagle on his shoulder, a nod to Paxton's second start of the season, when he had a close encounter with the majestic bird while warming up in the outfield before the Twins' home opener at Target Field.

Paxton gave up two hits and struck out 11 in eight innings to lead the Mariners to a 1-0 win over Kansas City. It was their season-best seventh consecutive victory. Seattle is 26-11 in one-run games this season.

Paxton (8-2) had plenty of family and friends at the game from his hometown of Ladner, British Columbia.

"It was cool to pitch on Canada Day and have the bobblehead," Paxton said. "It felt good today. The fastball, curveball and cutter all were working."

New York 11, Boston 1: The Yankees hit five home runs off David Price in the first four innings and Luis Severino became the first 13-game winner in the majors. The Yankees took two of three from the visiting Red Sox to regain baseball's best record.

Cleveland 15, Oakland 3: Francisco Lindor homered and hit two of Cleveland's 11 doubles (one short of the team record) as the visiting Indians ended the Athletics' six-game winning streak. Cleveland broke open the game with an eight-run eighth inning — its first 10 batters reached without an out.

Detroit 9, Toronto 1: The visiting Tigers ended an 11-game losing streak. Nick Castellanos hit a grand slam, Niko Goodrum had a career-high four hits, and Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven strong innings.

Tampa Bay 3, Houston 2: The Rays completed an 8-1 homestand, taking three of four from the Astros. Tampa Bay set a team record by allowing no more than two runs in its sixth straight game.

Chicago 10, Texas 5: Avisail Garcia had four hits and Matt Davidson and Jose Abreu drove in three runs apiece to help the White Sox avoid a sweep.

Baltimore 8, Los Angeles 2: Mark Trumbo hit two homers and Manny Machado added his 21st of the season as the Orioles ended a seven-game losing streak. Baltimore improved to 1-15 against the AL West. The Angels were seeking the first season sweep of Baltimore in franchise history.

National League

Philadelphia 4, Washington 3 (13): Andrew Knapp hit a game-ending pinch-hit homer in the 13th inning as the host Phillies came from behind to beat the Nationals. Philadelphia took three of four from Washington.

Cincinnati 8, Milwaukee 2: Jose Peraza became the eighth different Reds player to hit a grand slam this season, connecting in the sixth inning against the visiting Brewers. Cincinnati has hit nine grand slams this season, tying the franchise record set in 2002.

Atlanta 6, St. Louis 5: The Braves outscored the Cardinals 22-10 in sweeping a three-game series in St. Louis for first time since May 2012.

San Francisco 9, Arizona 6: The Giants swept the three-game series in Phoenix and are 7-1 in their past eight games.

Pittsburgh 7, San Diego 5: Colin Moran hit his second grand slam of the season for the visiting Pirates.

New York 5, Miami 2: The visiting Mets won for only the second time in their past 12 games.

Los Angeles 6, Colorado 4: Matt Kemp had three hits and four RBI for the host Dodgers.

Notes

• Reliever Pat Neshek, who was re-signed by the Phillies in the offseason, threw his first pitch in the majors this season on Sunday. He had been on the disabled list because of shoulder and forearm injuries.

• The Brewers optioned shortstop Orlando Arcia to Class AAA Colorado Springs. Arcia hit .197 in 66 games, including 56 starts.

Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible.
