Sports briefly: Roger Federer wins Stuttgart Open

Roger Federer defeated Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (3) to mark his return from three months off with the Stuttgart Open title on Sunday.

The Swiss great, who is assured of reclaiming the No. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal on Monday, broke at 1-1 in the opening set and held his serve in the second, where Raonic double-faulted.

Federer skipped the entire clay-court season for the second year in a row, but he wrapped up his 18th grass-court title in 1 hour, 18 minutes — his 98th title overall and third of the season after victories at the Australian Open and World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

• Top-seeded Ashleigh Barty defeated Johanna Konta 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the final of the Nottingham Open. Konta failed to shake the umpire's hand at the end of the match.

WNBA

L.A., Phoenix win

Chelsea Gray scored 21 points and Nneka Ogwumike added 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Los Angeles Sparks (8-2) beat the host Chicago Sky 81-72 to stay atop the WNBA standings. … Diana Taurasi scored 18 of her 28 in the first half and the Phoenix Mercury ran its winning streak to eight with a 92-80 victory over the Aces in Las Vegas.

Ryu triumphs

So Yeon Ryu won the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich., for her first victory of the season and sixth overall, closing with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke margin.

The South Korean birdied the par-5 16th and par-4 17th and parred the par-4 18th to finish at 21-under 267 at Blythefield Country Club.

Caroline Masson was second after a 68. Lydia Ko shot a 67 to finish third at 18 under.

AROUND THE HORN

NASCAR: Justin Allgaier won all three stages and the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway for his second victory of the season. Points leader Elliott Sadler lost a tire at the end of stage one. He finished 28th and saw his lead dwindle to four points.

24 Hours LeMans: Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso won the 24 Hours Le Mans on his debut in the classic endurance race. The Spanish driver, together with teammates Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi, completed 388 laps in their Toyota hybrid car.

NHRA: Tony Schumacher raced to his first Top Fuel victory of the season in the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. Ron Capps won the Funny Car event for the second year in a row, and Jeg Coughlin Jr. topped the Pro Stock field.
