Dustin Johnson leads St. Jude Classic by one stroke

Dustin Johnson shot 7-under 63 for his lowest round this year and grabbed a one-stroke lead Friday after 36 holes at the St. Jude Classic.

With a victory at TPC Southwind, Johnson would reclaim his spot as the world's top-ranked player going into the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. He had four of his seven birdies and an eagle on his back nine for a 29 and finished with a 10-under 130 total.

Ryan Blaum and Andrew Putnam each shot 64 and were tied second, and C.T. Pan (65) and Wesley Bryan (66) followed at 8 under. Brandt Snedeker shot his best round this year with a 62 that was one stroke off the course record. He was at 7 under.

Seamus Power, who came in with a one-stroke lead, shot a 69 to reach 6 under.

Two-time defending champ Daniel Berger (71-141) missed the cut.

... Two-time champion Anna Nordqvist shot a 5-under 66 for a share of the first-round lead with Laura Diaz and Celine Herbin in the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Lydia Ko, In-Gee Chun and ANA Inspiration winner Pernilla Lindberg were at 67 with Sandra Gal, Su Oh, Beatriz Recari, Amy Yang and Wayne, N.J., native Marina Alex. Defending champion I.K. Kim had a 68.

Shanshan Feng, at No. 4 the top-ranked player in the field, shot 69.

Leona Maguire had a 69 in pro debut.

... Bernhard Langer returned for a three-week break to shoot an 8-under 64 and take the first-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions' Principal Charity Classic.

Glen Day and Woody Austin were a stroke back, and defending champion Brandt Jobe was at 66 with Jerry Kelly, Tom Lehman and Doug Garwood.

AUTO RACING

Kurt Busch takes pole

Kurt Busch won his second NASCAR Cup Series pole of the season in qualifying for Sunday's race at Michigan International Speedway.

Brad Keselowski was second, followed by Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick. Kyle Busch and Harvick are 1-2 in the points standings and have won nine of the 14 races in the series.

It was the 24th pole of Kurt Busch's career. He posted a lap of 203.361 mph in his No. 41 Ford. He also started first in Texas in April and finished seventh. He hasn't won this season but has seven top-10 finishes.

Kyle Larson was 26th in qualifying.

AROUND THE HORN

WNBA: Tiffany Hayes scored 24 points, Angel McCoughtry had 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Atlanta beat Las Vegas 87-83. ... Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 10 of her career-high 35 points in the fourth quarter and Dallas overcame a 13-point deficit to beat Indiana.

College baseball: Kansas State hired former Oklahoma baseball coach Pete Hughes to lead its program. Hughes has a 652-492-3 record over 21 seasons at Trinity University, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma. He was 128-107-1 over four seasons with the Sooners.

NFL: Houston safety Andre Hal was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the blood cells. The Texans said Hal is "undergo testing and evaluation and is discussing his treatment options."

Baseball: Lenny Dykstra says an Uber driver kidnapped him last month in New Jersey in an incident that led to criminal charges against the former baseball star. Dykstra said the driver threatened him after he asked to change the trip's destination, then locked the car's doors and sped up so Dykstra couldn't exit the car. Dykstra said he called 911.
