49ers release veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman

San Francisco released linebacker NaVorro Bowman, the team's leading tackler, in a move that cut ties with one of the few remaining links from its last run of success.

The 49ers tried to trade Bowman, but he preferred to be released to have his choice of teams and San Francisco granted his request.

• Giants coach Ben McAdoo said he will review and revisit the indefinite suspension of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie "at the beginning of next week," leaving open the possibility that the cornerback could return to the Giants at that point.

• Texans safety Marcus Gilchrist was fined $24,309 by the NFL for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce last Sunday night. Kelce (concussion) and pass rusher Justin Houston (calf spasms) were back on the practice field and should be ready to go when Kansas City plays the Steelers on Sunday.

• Jets running back Bilal Powell (strained calf) and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (shoulder) are questionable to play against the Patriots on Sunday because of injuries.

• The Falcons will be without receiver Mohamed Sanu (hamstring) for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.

• One day after having his preliminary injunction thrown out, Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott said he plans to file an appeal over his six-game suspension.
