Everyone expected a free-agency flurry when the NFL's year began on Thursday. Predicting what happened with Brock Osweiler was beyond anyone's projections.
One year after signing a four-year deal with Houston, then losing the starting quarterback job to Tom Savage late in the season before returning and winning a playoff game, Osweiler is headed to Cleveland. The Texans basically took whatever deal they could get to rid themselves of a $16 million payout to Osweiler in 2017.
The Browns and Texans will swap their fourth- and sixth-round picks, respectively, in 2017, and Cleveland will get a 2018 second-rounder.
Cleveland also signed free-agent wide receiver Kenny Britt to a four-year, $32.5 million contract, former Packers center J.C. Tretter and former Bengals right guard Kevin Zeitler. The 28-year-old Britt had a career-best 68 catches for 1,002 yards and five touchdowns last season for the Rams. The Browns also gave left guard Joel Bitonio a five-year extension.
Eagles add two WRs
Philadelphia got perhaps the most coveted wideout available in Alshon Jeffery, who left Chicago, and also agreed to terms with Torrey Smith, who was cut by San Francisco.
Jeffery, 27, is coming off two down seasons in which he missed 11 games because of injury and suspension. His last solid season came in 2014, when he had 85 catches for 1,133 yards receiving and 10 TDs. Smith caught 53 passes for 930 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons in San Francisco.
Redskins fire GM
The Washington Redskins fired General Manager Scot McCloughan after two seasons for undisclosed reasons. Team President Bruce Allen said the organization remains confident in its personnel department to execute its free-agency plans and prepare for the draft.
Etc.
• Chicago released quarterback Jay Cutler, who had no guaranteed money left on his contract.
