NFL scores big with female fans

The NFL's new collection is aimed for the smart superfan who wants to be sexy, too.

Attention, female football fans: This season, the NFL is kicking off a women's apparel line that is sporty, feminine and sophisticated, especially when compared with the sparkly attire in the Victoria's Secret PINK NFL Collection, which probably seems better suited for your teen or college-age daughter.

To promote its hot new collection, the NFL has partnered with 20 powerful women who are all fervent supporters of the NFL and passionate about their teams. The campaign is dubbed It's My Team and represents the first time that the NFL has put so much energy into targeting females.

Most noteworthy is former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is shown modeling a Cleveland Browns jersey, saying "I never miss a game or a chance to show off my team colors!" The ad also showcases Serena Williams (Miami Dolphins), Melania Trump (New York Jets) and "Dancing With the Stars" alums Kym Johnson (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Peta Murgatroyd (Green Bay Packers).

So why did the NFL finally decide to launch this more female-friendly assortment of jerseys, T-shirts and hats?

"Forty-five percent of fans are female and that continues to grow," said Tracey Bleczinski, vice president of NFL Consumer Products. "We do have something for everyone, and this campaign aims to communicate that if you are living and wearing football, you can do it every day, year-round."

As avid football fans, the campaign's featured women think that the collection is genius. "It's smart that the NFL is starting to cater to the many women out there who want to show their team spirit," Saints fan DJ Kiss said in a recent "New York Times" article. "My girlfriends are bigger football fans than most guys I know."

With the season well underway, it's the perfect time to show some spirit. We especially like the V-Neck T-Shirt ($31.99), Long Sleeve Thermal Top ($35.99) and Big Logo Tank ($29.99), which strike a fashion-forward but functional balance.

"After spending so many seasons on the sidelines of NFL games, I know firsthand that while wanting to be fashionable, you need to dress warmly because it can be brutally cold," NFL sportscaster Melissa Stark told "The Times."
