Ex-U assistant to coach Kent State women's basketball

Former Gophers assistant coach Danielle O'Banion has been hired as the new women's basketball coach at Kent State.

Former Gophers assistant coach Danielle O'Banion has been hired as the new women's basketball coach at Kent State.

O'Banion, who spent the past four years at Memphis -- including the previous two as the associate head coach -- will be introduced at a news conference Thursday. O'Banion was an assistant under Pam Borton at Minnesota from 2003 to '07 before heading to Memphis.

At Kent State, she replaces Bob Lindsay, whose contract wasn't renewed after the season. The Golden Flashes went 6-21 this past year. It was only the third losing season in 23 years under Lindsay.

Etc. • Five Gophers pitchers combined on a five-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Nebraska-Omaha at the Metrodome. Starter Ty McDevitt worked four innings for the victory, and Kevin Kray got the last two outs for the save.

Sara Moulton allowed two hits and struck out 10 in six innings for the Gophers in a 5-0 victory over visiting North Dakota State. Kari Dorle and Madie Eckstrom homered.

• The fifth-ranked Gophers men's gymnastics team begins competition at the NCAA championships Thursday in Norman, Okla. The Gophers compete in a session with host Oklahoma, Illinois, Cal, Temple and Air Force.
