Opens Saturday: The nocturnal perambulations of the untethered mind have always been a fertile field for art. Adrift in dreamland, the brain latches onto the strangest companions in the most fanciful landscapes. For the next three years, Walker Art Center will sample some of these exotic vistas by more than 90 artists spanning the past century. Pulled primarily from the Walker's collection, "Midnight Party" will include such guests as Matthew Barney, in an elaborate video installation; sculptor Paul Thek; painter Mark Rothko; films by Kenneth Anger, Luis Buñuel, Maya Deren, Abel Gance and others. The show will include abstractions by Barnett Newman, Morris Louis and Clyfford Still; a Kiki Smith installation, a re-creation of Jana Sterbak's infamous dress made of steak -- done 23 years before Lady Gaga picked up on the idea -- and a periodically changing drawing exhibit that will start with Expressionist and Symbolist sketches.
