Repetition & Ritual: New Sculpture in Fiber
Closing next weekend: Fifteen contemporary American sculptors, including Minnesotans Kim Matthews and Karen Searle, are showcased in this celebration of 3-D fiber art. Traditionally imagined as a cozy, intimate and tactile medium, fiber art explodes here in surrealistic, psychologically ripe imagery suggesting everything from body innards to fungi and sea creatures. Many of the techniques are familiar: weaving, knitting, felting, embroidery and various types of needlework. But in the hands of these inventive talents, the results are as novel as the materials they employ, which include wire, paper, nylon stockings, fur, feathers and pig intestine.
