QUANTIFIED AESTHETICS

Opening: From the first primitive scratches on rocks and clay tablets to the complex algorithms that control computer programs, numbers inform and organize our lives. A new show of books, prints and book-shaped sculptures illustrates the myriad ways contemporary artists incorporate numbers into their work. Organized by the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, the art incorporates codes, formulas, counting systems and random numbers in works by 45 contemporary artists from eight countries. Susan Collard's book box, shown here, uses a wooden block to hark back to childhood, when counting on fingers and toes was such fun. (Reception 6-9 p.m. Fri., free. Open Book, 1011 Washington Av. S., Mpls. Ends June 20; free. 612-215-2520 or www.mnbookarts.org)
