Opens Friday 9/16
Right from the invention of photography, artists were interested in the medium's potential to show things beyond what the human eye can see in a glance. In the 19th century, that included composite images of the Egyptian desert, mountainous landscapes and elaborately staged scenes that mimicked paintings. Now it includes 360-degree images like Tetsu Okuhara's 1971 portrait of "Susan," from which a detail is shown here. Organized by Minneapolis Institute of Arts curator Christian Peterson, "Wide-Eyed" samples that rich history in 35 horizontal and vertical prints, books, X-rays, an installation and a coffee can imprinted with a photo by Ansel Adams. Featured artists include such national stars as Berenice Abbott and Ed Ruscha as well as Minnesota-based talents Christopher Faust, Stuart Klipper and others.
