'Minidewak'

Saturday: Beautiful books are still a treasure worth touching and celebrating. The Minnesota Center for Book Arts has done so for more than two decades with the publication of its annual "Winter Book," a beautifully bound collectors' item. This year's volume is "Minidewak," four selections from "Braiding Sweetgrass," Robin Wall Kimmerer's poetic essays about the "indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and teachings of plants." A botany professor, Kimmerer gleaned plant wisdom from her Potawatomi heritage — including the word "Minidewak," which means "they give from the heart." Illustrations, including the handsome bee shown here, are by Nate Christopherson. (Reading by Kimmerer at 7 p.m. Sat., followed by reception. Free. Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Av. S., Mpls.; 612-215-2520 or www.mnbookarts.org)
