Besides the dances he choreographed, Merce Cunningham was known for the free hand he gave designers and musicians who created the sets and sounds for his troupe's performances. Last spring the Walker acquired about 150 of Cunningham's sets, costumes and props by artists ranging from Robert Rauschenberg to Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol and Ernesto Neto, whose pendulous creation is shown here. The Rio de Janeiro-based artist designed it for a 2004 performance at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. Made of sheer, stretchy fabric, the sculpture was bathed with colored lights as it hung over the dancers during performances. Through July 1, the Neto sculpture hangs in a Walker gallery where visitors can walk under and peer up at it. A separate gallery features sets and costumes designed by Rauschenberg, up through April 8.
