'150 YEARS OF SWEDISH ART'
Opening Monday: In honor of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Gustavus Adolphus College, Sweden's two leading art museums, the National Museum and the Moderna Museet, have loaned the Swedish-heritage school 44 paintings that survey the homeland's art from 1862 to today. Highlights include spectacular 19th-century vistas of summery meadows, snow-clad forests and turbulent rivers; ghost-filled mists swirling through dark dales; a dramatic re-enactment of the death of King Gustav II, the college's namesake, and modernist works by a host of 20th-century artists. Designed to introduce Americans to lesser-known Swedish talents, the show offers an array of national treasures, including paintings by Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors, the playwright August Strindberg and the French post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin.
