'I Hate Myself, Will You Please Love Me?'

Opens Saturday: The breezy love songs and pop ballads of the Carpenters, contrasted with the tragic story of the 1970s brother-and-sister act's climb to fame, provides the backdrop for Mathew Janczewski's 2011 work. As part of Arena Dances' 20th anniversary season, Janczewski revisits this piece about the Carpenter family, marked by the tragedy of the sweet-voiced Karen Carpenter, who died of an eating disorder. Besides the music of the Carpenters, the show's soundtrack also draws on American Music Club, Johnette Napolitano & Marc Moreland and Fourtet. (7:30 p.m. Sat. & Aug. 11-15; 2 p.m. Sun. & Aug. 16. Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Av. S., Mpls., $24, southerntheater.org.)
