Area college football roundup: St. Thomas offense stays hot with rout of Stetson

The Tommies have scored 164 points over their past three games.

Andy Peters threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 80 yards and another score to lead St. Thomas to a 52-10 Pioneer League victory over Stetson on Saturday in DeLand, Fla.

The victory was the third in a row for the Tommies (5-3, 3-2 Pioneer), and in all three victories, they scored at least 50 points. They have outscored Davidson, Valparaiso and Stetson 164-40 in the winning streak.

Peters threw two TD passes and 240 yards in the first half as the Tommies built a 22-0 lead at halftime. The 240 yards were the most by a St. Thomas quarterback in the program’s Division I era.

Peters scored on a 1-yard TD run to cap the Tommies’ first possession of the second half to make it 28-0. Peters’ third TD pass — a 19-yarder to JaShawn Todd — made it 38-3 with 32 seconds left in the third quarter. Peters’ 292 yards broke the school record for the D-I era, surpassing Cade Sexauer’s 286 against San Diego in October 2022.

Logan Cassady returned an interception 46 yards early in the fourth quarter to extend the Tommies’ lead to 44-3.

The Tommies outgained the Hatters (3-6, 2-3) 558-120. Stetson had only 17 yards of offense and two first downs in the first half.

Illinois State 21, South Dakota 13: Tommy Rittenhouse passed for 141 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead the Redbirds past the host Coyotes. Rittenhouse’s 6-yard TD run with 30 seconds left in the first half gave the Redbirds a 14-10 lead. Scotty Presson Jr.’s 2-yard TD catch late in the third quarter extended the lead to 21-10. South Dakota pulled within eight with 3:38 to play on a 42-yard field goal by Will Leyland, but the Coyotes turned it over on downs on their next possession, and the clock ran out on their final drive.

North Dakota 46, Indiana State 17: Jerry Kaminski threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns, Sawyer Seidl ran for 104 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as the host and eighth-ranked Fighting Hawks routed the Sycamores.

Division II

Northern State 49, MSU Moorhead 48 (OT): The Wolves stopped a two-point conversion attempt in overtime to beat the Dragons in Aberdeen, S.D.

The Wolves, who trailed 42-31 with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, sent the game to OT on a 23-yard field goal by Jeremy Caruso with 9 seconds remaining.

The Wolves went on offense first in the OT and scored on Wyatt Block’s 12-yard run and Caruso’s PAT. The Dragons scored on their possession on an 11-yard TD pass from Jack Strand to Gage Florence, but their pass attempt for two failed.

Block finished with 192 rushing yards and two TDs, while Daniel Britt passed for 210 yards and two TDs and rushed for 132 yards and a TD for the Wolves.

Strand threw for 379 yards and three TDs as he became the second passer in NSIC history to throw for more than 12,000 yards in a career.

Minnesota Duluth 54, Mary 32: Kyle Walljasper threw for 258 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 90 yards and another score to help the No. 11 Bulldogs outlast the visiting Marauders. Walljasper threw four TD passes and ran for his TD in the first half as UMD built a 37-18 halftime lead. He threw two TD passes in the third quarter to put his team ahead 51-25 going into the fourth quarter.

Wayne State (Neb.) 35, Minnesota State Mankato 20: Brennan Hayes had touchdown runs of 75 and 69 yards, finishing with 184 rushing yards as the host Wildcats beat the eighth-ranked Mavericks. Hayes’ first long run put Wayne State ahead 13-0 in the first quarter, and his second gave the Wildcats a 32-14 lead early in the fourth. Mitchell Thompson threw for 161 yards and three TDs and rushed for 65 yards for the Mavericks.

Augustana 57, Southwest Minnesota State 29: Rich Lucero threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns and Breylon Blount rushed for 136 yards and two TDs to pace the No. 10 Vikings to a victory over the host Mustangs in Marshall, Minn. Macloud Crowton threw for 453 yards and three TDs for Southwest Minnesota State.

Winona State 24, Concordia (St. Paul) 14: Jackson Flottmeyer passed for 162 yards and a TD and ran for a TD and Jahmani Muhammad ran for 141 yards in the host Warriors’ victory over the Golden Bears.

Bemidji State 47, Jamestown 25: Bart McAninch completed 20 of 23 passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns to lead the host Beavers to their third victory in a row, this one over the Jimmies.

Division III

St. Olaf 44, St. Scholastica 41: Ethan Hess kicked a 29-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to lift the host Oles to a come-from-behind victory over the Saints. Byron Sauvy rushed for a career-high 231 yards and two touchdowns for the Oles, who ran for 390 yards. St. Olaf trailed 38-24 midway through the third quarter but tied the score at 41-41 on Rob Htoo’s 1-yard TD run with 8:42 remaining.

Concordia (Moorhead) 26, Augsburg 7: Grant Mages had two of the Cobbers’ four interceptions against the host Auggies, returning one 17 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Mason Hughes ran 16 times for 90 yards for Concordia, including a 39-yard touchdown run.

Bethel 53, Macalester 0: The host and fifth-ranked Royals remained unbeaten as Cooper Drews threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 82 yards and a TD against the Scots.

Gustavus Adolphus 63, Hamline 9: Dylan Blount threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, and Walker Britz rushed for three TDs in the Gusties’ victory over the host Pipers.

Greenville 27, Minnesota Morris 20: Terrel Graves’ 99-yard TD run with 1:57 remaining clinched the Panthers’ victory in Greenville, Ill. Graves’ TD came on first down after Carlis Wilson intercepted a Cougars pass at the Greenville 1-yard line with the Panthers leading 21-20. Graves finished with 291 rushing yards and three TDs.

Martin Luther 38, Westminster 28: Brady Turriff passed for 364 yards and four TDs and Jasper Lawrenz returned an interception 55 yards for a TD to lead the Knights to a victory in Fulton, Mo. Lawrenz’s TD early in the fourth quarter gave the Knights a 30-21 lead.

Northwestern (St. Paul) 24, Crown 16: Basil Demco ran for two TDs and threw a TD pass as the host Eagles intercepted four passes in ending the Polars’ four-game winning streak. Demco’s two rushing TDs helped the Eagles take a 17-10 lead at halftime. Early in the third quarter, he completed a 49-yard TD pass to Braeden Little to give the Eagles a 24-10 lead.
