Area college football roundup: Presbyterian ends St. Thomas’ five-game winning streak

The Tommies close out the regular season at top-ranked North Dakota State next week. The NCAA Division II and III playoff fields will be announced Sunday.

Presbyterian forced three turnovers and ended St. Thomas’ five-game winning streak with a 23-9 victory on Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium.

The Tommies (7-4, 5-3 Pioneer) concluded the Pioneer League portion of their schedule with a loss. They close out the season next week at top-ranked North Dakota State.

St. Thomas, which trailed 10-0 at halftime, pulled within 10-9 in the third quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Ben Hoiland and a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown by Branden Smith. The Tommies’ two-point conversion attempt failed.

Presbyterian (9-2, 5-2) controlled the fourth quarter with scoring drives of 79 and 60 yards. Collin Hurst threw for 237 yards and two TDs for the Blue Hose, who outgained the Tommies 298-175.

South Dakota 53, Southern Illinois 51 (5OT): Aidan Bouman’s two-point conversion pass to Larenzo Fenner in the fifth overtime lifted the Coyotes over the host Salukis. Bouman passed for 300 yards and five touchdowns, three of them to Fenner, as South Dakota rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

North Dakota 35, Murray State 17: Jerry Kaminski threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and the No. 13 Fighting Hawks outscored the host Racers 28-8 in the second half to rally for a victory in Murray, Ky.

Illinois State 35, South Dakota State 21: The Redbirds built a 35-0 lead in the second quarter against the host Jackrabbits, who have lost four in a row following a 7-0 start.

North Dakota State 48, Northern Iowa 16: Cole Payton threw for 212 yards and a TD and ran for 74 yards and two TDs for the host Bison.

Division II

Minnesota State Moorhead 31, Minnesota State Mankato 23: Jack Strand passed for 240 yards and three TDs and rushed for 118 yards to lead the Dragons past the host Mavericks to end the regular season. Mitchell Thompson ran for 126 yards and two scores for MSU Moorhead. The NCAA Division II playoff field is announced Sunday.

Bemidji State 34, Mary 21: Bart McAninch passed for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Isaiah Tisdle ran for two scores for the host Beavers.

Minnesota Duluth 33, Minot State 7: Quarterback Kyle Walljasper rushed for 157 yards and three TDs as the Bulldogs defeated the host Beavers.

Winona State 30, Southwest Minnesota State 6: Jackson Flottmeyer ran for two scores and threw a TD pass for the host Warriors vs. the Mustangs.

Wayne State (Neb.) 38, Augustana 31: The host Wildcats led 38-17 with seven minutes remaining and held on against the Vikings.

Division III

Bethel 62, St. Scholastica 0: The No. 5 Royals completed an unbeaten regular season and wrapped up the MIAC title with a shutout in Duluth. Cooper Drews passed for 200 yards and four TDs for the Royals, who earned their 16th regular-season victory in a row. Bethel will learn of its NCAA Division III playoff draw Sunday.

Gustavus Adolphus 38, Macalester 14: Dylan Blount passed for 347 yards and three TDs and Eric Lyons Jr. returned an interception 100 yards for a TD to lead the host Gusties past the Scots. Trailing 31-14 with six minutes remaining, Macalester drove to the Gustavus 5-yard line before Lyons’ interception.

St. John’s 63, St. Olaf 21: Trey Feeney passed for 324 yards and five touchdowns and Corey Bohmert rushed for 159 yards and two TDs to lead the No. 8 Johnnies past the visiting Oles.

Concordia (Moorhead) 31, Carleton 24: Mason Hughes ran for 230 yards and two TDs for the visiting Cobbers. Hughes’ 61-yard TD tied the score in the third quarter, and Jeremy Selzler’s 30-yard TD pass to Alejandro Sanchez early in the fourth put Concordia ahead.

Crown 38, Greenville 20: Jamarrius Courtney rushed for 137 yards and three TDs and threw a 42-yard TD pass to lead the Polars in Greenville, Ill. Crown earned its first UMAC title and the conference’s automatic bid in the Division III playoffs.

Martin Luther 36, Minnesota Morris 14: Arthur Robinson rushed 38 times for 278 yards and a TD in the host Knights’ victory over the Cougars.

Westminster 15, Northwestern (St. Paul) 6: Trey Thomas threw for 193 yards and two TDs and the Blue Jays forced five turnovers by the host Eagles.

Friday

Augsburg 43, Hamline 3: Tyrone Wilson had 13 receptions for 144 yards and three TDs to lead the host Auggies past the Pipers. Caden Rodkewich completed 26 of 33 passes for 275 yards for the Auggies.
