Area college football roundup: Minnesota State Mankato pulls away from Augustana

Bethel’s Albert Rundell had an MIAC single-game record 21 receptions for 214 yards and scored five touchdowns against Carleton.

Mitchell Thompson ran for 133 yards and three touchdowns and Jamal Spiyee returned a fumble 24 yards for a TD to lead Minnesota State Mankato, ranked 19th in NCAA Division II, past No. 8 Augustana 45-21 on Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Thompson’s 2-yard run with 65 seconds left in the first half broke a 14-14 tie. Spiyee’s TD with 3:10 left in the third quarter extended the Mavericks’ lead to 34-14. The Mavericks (8-2, 7-2 NSIC) eventually opened a 45-14 lead.

The Mavericks defense forced four Augustana turnovers as the Vikings (9-1, 8-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

Minnesota State Moorhead 44, Jamestown 20: Gage Florence had 10 catches for 93 yards and a TD for the host Dragons to become the D-II all-time leader in career receptions with 392. Jack Strand threw for 268 yards and five TDs for MSU Moorhead.

Concordia (St. Paul) 19, Southwest Minnesota State 14: Joel Lacy ran for 144 yards and three TDs and Daniel Hornacek rushed for 130 yards as the Golden Bears outlasted the host Mustangs. Lacy’s 91-yard TD run with 2:48 left in the first half gave Concordia a 13-7 lead.

Minnesota Duluth 42, Bemidji State 28: Kyle Walljasper rushed for 144 yards and two TDs and threw for 138 yards and two more scores to lead the 10th-ranked Bulldogs past the visiting Beavers.

Winona State 36, Mary 29: The Warriors scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally in Bismarck, N.D. Jackson Flottmeyer threw for 230 yards and a TD and rushed for two TDs and Jahmani Muhammad also ran for two TDs for Winona State.

Division III

Bethel 49, Carleton 7: Cooper Drews passed for 405 yards and six touchdowns and Albert Rundell had an MIAC single-game record 21 receptions for 214 yards and five TDs as the host Royals, ranked No. 4 in Division III, routed the Knights.

St. John’s 70, St. Scholastica 21: Trey Feeney threw for 294 yards and five TDs as the No. 10 Johnnies defeated the visiting Saints to become the 56th college football program to reach 700 victories. Riley Schwellenbach caught three TD passes in a row in the second quarter for St. John’s, the last of which made it 49-0 just before halftime.

Concordia (Moorhead) 17, Macalester 14: Jeremy Selzler rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Cobbers past the host Scots. Selzler’s 20-yard TD run pulled Concordia within 14-10 with 8:16 left, and his 2-yard TD run with 1:10 to play capped a four-play, 74-yard drive.

St. Olaf 41, Hamline 34: Landon Dillon rushed for 228 yards and a TD and Luke Crosby threw two TD passes and ran for a TD to lift the host Oles over the Pipers. Zayden Stevens threw for 226 yards and four TDs and Will Priest rushed for 176 yards for Hamline.

Gustavus Adolphus 31, Augsburg 10: Dylan Blount completed 25 of 31 passes for 305 yards and threw three TD passes to lead the Gusties past the host Auggies.

Crown 34, Martin Luther 21: Jamarrius Courtney rushed for 242 yards and four TDs as the host Polars clinched at least a share of the UMAC title. Courtney had TD runs of 71, 66, 45 and 7 yards among his 15 carries.

Minnesota Morris 14, Westminster 7: Bryson Drake ran for a TD and caught a TD pass to help the host Cougars hold off the Blue Jays.

Northwestern (Roseville) 17, Greenville 14: The Eagles built a 17-0 lead and held on in Greenville, Ill. The host Panthers scored with 57 seconds remaining to get within three and got the ball back with 30 seconds left, but time ran out on them. Basil Demco passed for 150 yards and a TD and rushed for 67 yards and a TD for Northwestern.
