Area college football roundup: Minnesota Duluth routs Concordia (St. Paul)

Kyle Walljasper threw for three touchdowns in a dominant first half for the Bulldogs.

Kyle Walljapser threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns on only 7-for-10 passing and Minnesota Duluth routed host Concordia (St. Paul) 61-7 on Saturday.

Walljasper threw a 45-yard touchdown to Ben Fritsch in the first quarter and a 48-yard TD to Luke Dehnicke in the second before ending the first half with a 3-yard TD pass to Francis O’Malley. That score gave UMD a 40-0 halftime lead.

Concordia’s only points came on a 79-yard touchdown pass from Lincoln Graf to Timothy Davis near the end of the third quarter.

Winona State 21, Bemidji State 17: Anthony Powell ran for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns and the host Warriors rallied from a 17-point deficit in the first half against the Beavers. The Beavers drove to the Warriors 18 with 33 seconds left, but Winona State defensive lineman David Nies recovered a Bemidji State fumble at the 27.

Minnesota State Mankato 34, Minot State 16: Sam Backer ran for two touchdowns and TreShawn Watson caught two touchdown passes to pace the host Mavericks, ranked No. 3 in the D2football.com poll, past the Beavers. Watson also returned a kickoff 95 yards to set up a field goal. After Minot State pulled within 13-10 early in the third quarter, Backer scored on a 1-yard run and Watson caught a 71-yard TD pass.

Augustana 37, Jamestown 7: Gunnar Hensley passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns in Sioux Falls for the Vikings against the Jimmies, who were playing their first game at the Division II level.

Division III

Hamline 28, Crown 21: Zayden Stevens threw for 282 yards and three TDs to help the Pipers outlast the visiting Polars. Jamarrius Courtney rushed for 185 yards and passed for 138 yards and a TD for Crown.

St. Olaf 32, Northwestern (St. Paul) 7: Ethan Hess kicked three field goals and Tony Avila-Tovalin recovered a muffed punt in the end zone for a TD as the Oles beat the Eagles in Northfield.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 45, Carleton 14: Brian Stanton rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries as the host Warhawks, ranked No. 14 in the D3football.com poll, ran past the Knights.

Macalester 20, Grinnell 15: Jack Scully passed for 274 yards and two TDs as the Scots held off the host Pioneers. Grinnell scored twice in a 28-second span to pull within 20-15 with 4:39 remaining, but Macalester was able to run out the clock.

Concordia (Moorhead) 14, Mayville State 6: Mason Hughes rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and the host Cobbers opened the season with a victory,

Concordia (Chicago) 17, Minnesota Morris 16: Joron Brown scored on a 6-yard run with 58 seconds left and Concordia came back to win in River Forest, Ill.

St. Scholastica 41, Wisconsin Lutheran 27: Jevon Williams rushed for 227 yards and four TDs to lead the Saints over the Warriors in Wauwatosa, Wis.

Whitworth 23, Gustavus Adolphus 10: Logan Lacio ran for a TD and threw a TD pass and the Pirates won in Spokane, Wash. Jacob Ginskey rushed for 110 yards and a TD and passed for 158 yards for the Gusties.
