Area college football: MSU Mankato buries Winona State early

Minnesota State Mankato built a 20-point lead in the first 19 minutes en route to a 44-10 drubbing of Winona State in an NSIC game in Mankato on Saturday.

It was the 19th consecutive regular-season victory for the Mavericks (8-0, 4-0 South), who took over sole possession of first place in their division standings. Winona State (5-3, 3-1) had a five-game winning streak ended.

Jon Wolf passed for one touchdown and ran for another in the first quarter as the Mavericks opened a 14-0 lead. Dennis Carter's 68-yard punt return for a TD early in the second quarter put the Mavericks ahead 20-0.

Wolf passed for 238 yards and three TDs and rushed for 83 yards and a TD. Carter caught nine passes for 125 yards and two TDs.

St. Cloud State 64, Northern State 7: Phillip Klaphake threw for 293 yards and five TDs to lead the No. 22 Huskies (7-1, 3-1 NSIC North) past the visiting Wolves.

Concordia (St. Paul) 28, Wayne State 24: Jared Russo threw two TD passes in the final 2:37 as the Golden Bears (4-4, 1-3 NSIC South) rallied to beat the host Wildcats. Corey Cole's 100-yard kickoff return for a TD gave the Golden Bears a 13-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Wildcats scored 17 unanswered points to take a 24-13 lead.

Minn. Duluth 31, Bemidji State 21: The No. 7-ranked Bulldogs (7-1, 4-0 NSIC North) scored 14 points in the final nine minutes to rally past the host Beavers. Drew Bauer's 14-yard TD run gave the Bulldogs a 23-21 lead with 8:56 left.

MSU Moorhead 48, Mary 41: The host Dragons built a 34-7 lead en route to the victory over the Marauders. Jake Hodge passed for 301 yards and three TDs for the Dragons (2-6, 2-2 NSIC North). Craig Bagnell passed for 399 yards and five TDs for Mary.

UMAC

St. Scholastica 38, Eureka 25: Jake Jensen rushed for 128 yards and two TDs as the Saints (7-1, 7-0 UMAC) remained in a tie with Greenville for the conference lead.

Crown 28, MacMurray 14: Duran Zachary ran for two TDs as the host Storm outlasted MacMurray.

Martin Luther 35, Minn.-Morris 32: Matthew Olson's 1-yard TD run with 4:35 left — his third TD of the game — lifted the Knights past the Cougars.

Northwestern (Roseville) 36, Westminster (Mo.) 21: Jacob Fletcher passed for 243 yards and three TDs to lead the host Eagles to the victory.

Upper Midwest

Washington (Mo.) 7, Macalester 0: Cody Ratermann's 15-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter lifted the Bears past the host Scots.
