LONDON — While Europe was consumed last week by the fallout from the Paris terror attacks, life still went on, and other parts of Europe and Africa were hit by disasters both man-made and natural.

Residents in Malawi endured flooding that displaced 200,000 people. Fighting in eastern Ukraine surged to a new intensity around Donetsk, forcing residents to seek safety in shelters.

In Paris, pallbearers carried the decorated casket of a cartoonist slain by terrorists and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry came to the French capital to pay his respects to the terror victims.

In sports, the African Cup of Nations tournament opened in Equatorial Guinea, the Biathlon World Cup took place in Germany and ski jumpers took to the skies at the Ski Jumping World Cup in Poland.

In annual rites, a horse rider in Spain paid tribute to Saint Anthony the Abbot, the patron saint of domestic animals, while in Tanzania, giraffes walked through Serengeti National Park.
