The week that was in Latin America kicked off with a classic clash between Argentine archrivals Boca Juniors and River Plate that went awry. During the game for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores fans threw tear gas at River Plate players as they entered the field for the second half. The match turned into chaos when players came out of a temporary tunnel rubbing their eyes and pulling their shirts over their faces. Police and officials waited on the field for more than an hour before suspending the game.

In Brazil, Adriano de Souza competed in the 2015 Oi Rio Pro World Surf League competition at Barra da Tijuca beach in Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, the bodies of two men were found dead in the Sao Carlos "pacified" slum complex.

At the nursery at the Bangu Penitentiary Complex in Rio a mother held her newborn son, while President Dilma Rousseff rode in a trackmobile during her visit to the construction site of a new subway line being built in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood.

In Bolivia, demonstrators clashed with police during the second day of protests in Apacheta, on the outskirts of El Alto. Protesters were demanding better roads.

In Colombia, Joani Londono, 5, who was born with a club foot and a missing leg, sat at her home in in Crucito in Cordoba state. Joani's mother, Adevis Edith Diaz, claims the girl was born premature and she began to have pregnancy problems after she ate vegetables from a plot fumigated with chemicals from a plane.

In Tierralta, Colombia, a man steered a boat on the Urra hydroelectric dam reservoir. The dam was built in the 1990s in spite of a campaign against it led by local Embera communities that claimed it would flood its ancestral lands and cause environmental problems.

In Guatemala, thousands of protesters gathered outside the National Palace to demand the resignation of President Otto Perez Molina.
