Gophers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. added to his postseason honors Monday when he was named to The Associated Press All-America team.
Winfield is the first Minnesota player to be named to the first team since tight end Matt Spaeth in 2006. The last Gophers player to earn a place among the AP's top players was tight end Maxx Williams, who was a second-team selection in 2014.
Wide receiver Rashod Bateman was named to the third team.
Winfield was named to the Walter Camp Foundation's All-America team last week and was also honored as the Big Ten's Defensive Back of the Year. He was also one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is presented to the nation's top defensive player. Chase Young of Ohio State was named the winner last week.
Winfield's seven interceptions this season tied a school record and was fourth in the nation. Bateman was the Big Ten Receiver of the Year and set a school record with 1,170 receiving yards. He also scored 11 touchdowns.
No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Ohio State each placed three players on The Associated Press first team.
Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow of LSU highlights the first-team offense and Heisman finalist Chase Young of Ohio State leads the defense on the team that was chosen by a panel of 15 college football poll voters.
The top-ranked Tigers also placed receiver Ja'Marr Chase and cornerback Derek Stingley on the first team. Young was joined on the first team by Ohio State by teammates Wyatt Davis, a guard, and Jeff Okudah, a cornerback. No. 3 Clemson's only first-team All-American was linebacker Isaiah Simmons. No. 4 Oklahoma was represented on the first team by receiver CeeDee Lamb.
