The North Star College Cup will move to a Saturday-Sunday format for the third year of the annual in-state college hockey tournament at Xcel Energy Center in January.
Defending champion Bemidji State, last year's NCAA tournament No. 1 seed Minnesota State Mankato, St. Cloud State and the Gophers will compete for bragging rights in this season's four-team field. Minnesota Duluth rotates out after playing the first two years.
The tournament kicks off Jan. 30, with St. Cloud State and Minnesota State at 1 p.m. and Bemidji State and the Gophers at 4 p.m.
The losing teams will play Jan. 31 in a 1 p.m. consolation game, followed by the championship at 4 p.m.
The Gophers won the inaugural tournament in a shootout and Bemidji State upset two top-10 opponents to claim last season's title.
Lucia named a captain
Notre Dame named senior left winger Mario Lucia as an alternate captain for the 2015-16 season.
Lucia, son of Gophers hockey coach Don Lucia, played in all 42 games as a junior and scored a team-high 21 goals and added 11 assists
Lucia also was a 2011 second-round draft pick of the Wild.
•The teams of Leif Carlson-Greg Murphy and Mark Hayes-Patrick Muellerleile each shot a 3-under 69 to lead the first day of competition of the MGA Amateur Four-Ball at Dellwood Country Club. Thirteen teams advanced to Thursday's final round; another group of teams will compete Wednesday to join the final field.
•Andy LaRoche hit his second home run of the game, a walkoff solo shot in the ninth inning, to lift the host Wichita Wingnuts over the St. Paul Saints 6-5. The Saints have lost four games in a row.
• Minnesota Duluth hired Matt Hockett as lead assistant to Bulldogs men's basketball coach Matt Bowen. Hockett is a former Bulldogs captain who spent the past six seasons coaching the boys' basketball team at Stoughton (Wis.) High School.
