Matt Shoemaker turned his head just enough to avoid taking Kyle Seager's 105-mile-per-hour line drive square in the face, then stumbled before falling to the grass.

"That was probably the scariest thing I've ever seen on a baseball field," Seager said.

Shoemaker was hospitalized because of a small skull fracture and small hematoma during the Los Angeles Angels' 4-2 victory over the host Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Shoemaker was struck on the right side of his head with one out in the second inning, getting his face out of the way but failing to get his mitt up in time to stop the hard-hit ball.

After the game, the Angels announced a CT scan revealed the small fracture and hematoma. He was to be seen by a neurologist and remain in Seattle overnight.

"You see him sitting there on the ground and all the trainers and doctors out there and you really don't care that much about a stupid game at that point," Seager said.

Shoemaker was down for several minutes and bleeding from the spot where he was hit.

"The fact of the matter is he was conscious and at least all his reactions were what they were supposed to be on the assessment. I think we could exhale a little bit," Scioscia said.

Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and six relievers combined to shut down Seattle after Shoemaker was struck.

Oakland 1, Boston 0: Eduardo Rodriguez's no-hit bid was broken up after a replay reversal with two outs in the eighth inning, and Khris Davis hit a walk-off double in the ninth that sent the host Athletics past the Red Sox.

Rodriguez stuck out his right leg to knock down Marcus Semien's eighth-inning grounder. The lefthander had to search for the ball in the dirt on the mound before scooping it up and making a quick throw.

Semien initially was ruled out by umpire Laz Diaz. The A's challenged the call, which was overturned after a review that lasted about 19 seconds.

In the ninth, Brock Holt misplayed Davis' double in deep left field for an error that enabled Danny Valencia to score from first after he walked against Craig Kimbrel. The A's ended a five-game losing streak.

Detroit 6, Kansas City 5: Justin Upton hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, sending the Tigers past the host Royals. Miguel Cabrera hit a leadoff single before Upton drove a fastball from Joakim Soria to center for his 20th homer. Upton has seven homers and 18 RBI in his past 14 games.

Houston 7, Texas 6: George Springer and Evan Gattis homered as the Astros ended the seven-game winning streak of the host Rangers. Houston improved to 3-13 vs. the AL West leaders this season and is 9½ games behind in the division.

Toronto 5, Tampa Bay 3: Russell Martin hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Kevin Jepsen the eighth inning to help the Blue Jays avoid a three-game sweep by the host Rays and move a game ahead of Boston in the AL East.

New York 5, Baltimore 2: Chase Headley and Austin Romine had two RBI apiece, and the visiting Yankees avoided a sweep.

National League

Milwaukee 10, Pittsburgh 0: Domingo Santana had two home runs, pinch hitter Jonathan Villar delivered a grand slam and Chris Carter connected for his 32nd home run as the Brewers handed the host Pirates their sixth loss in a row.

New York 5, Washington 1: Curtis Granderson homered and drove in three runs, Seth Lugo pitched seven strong innings and the host Mets beat the Nationals to take two of three from the NL East leaders.

Los Angeles 7, San Diego 4: Jose De Leon struck out nine in winning his major league debut and pinch hitter Yasmani Grandal drove in three runs as the host Dodgers rallied vs. the Padres.

St. Louis 5, Cincinnati 2: Randal Grichuk and Kolten Wong homered and visiting Cardinals ended a three-game slide.

Atlanta 2, Philadelphia 0: Julio Teheran pitched six innings, Matt Kemp homered and the Braves beat the host Phillies.

Arizona 8, Colorado 5: Socrates Brito hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning for the visiting Diamondbacks.

Interleague

Cleveland 6, Miami 5: Lonnie Chisenhall capped a three-run rally with a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning off Fernando Rodney, leading the host Indians to their sixth victory in a row. Jose Ramirez's two-run single tied it, also with two outs.

In this photo taken Monday, March 6, 2017, in San Francisco, released confidential files by The University of California of a sexual misconduct case, like this one against UC Santa Cruz Latin Studies professor Hector Perla is shown. Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible. Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
