Three weeks after avoiding a ban for missed drug tests, U.S. sprinter Christian Coleman became a world champion Sunday, winner of the 100 meters, the marquee event of the track and field world championships in Doha, Qatar.
Coleman won in 9.76 seconds, and American defending champion Justin Gatlin was second. Andre de Grasse of Canada was third.
In a world sprinting landscape changed by the retirement of Usain Bolt, Coleman raced amid allegations that could stay with him all the way to next summer's Tokyo Olympics. He missed three drug tests between June 2018 and April 2019. That's supposed to lead to a doping ban, but the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency dropped the case because Coleman argued he had simply failed to update an app telling authorities where he was. Coleman has passed more than 20 doping tests in the past two years.
Elsewhere, DeAnna Price became the first U.S. woman to win a world championship throwing event with victory in the hammer. She threw 77.54 meters.
