Former Gophers guard Zach Lofton will transfer to Texas Southern, which has signed him to a national letter of intent, according to Basketball Times columnist Joshua Parrott.

The junior and St. Paul native heads to his fourth college after failing to play a single game for the Gophers. Minnesota coach Richard Pitino signed Lofton, who previously played one year at San Jacinto College and one year at Illinois State, in April of last year, but dismissed him from the team after a single exhibition game, citing his failure to “meet the expectations and obligations of the team.”

Lofton would have redshirted last year regardless, because of NCAA transfer rules. He still has two years of eligibility remaining.

Pitino had speculated that Lofton had a “long shot” chance to rejoin the team this season had he fulfilled undisclosed requirements back in April, but had given no guarantees.

Lofton averaged 11.3 points and three rebounds a game as a sophomore with Illinois State.
