All 10 Gophers advance to Southern Scuffle wrestling quarterfinals

All of the Gophers' 10 regular wrestlers advanced Wednesday to the Southern Scuffle quarterfinals at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Senior Tony Nelson, the top seed at heavyweight, pinned Ethan Hayes of Virginia in 2:28 and Tyler Swope of Iowa State in 2:40.

Chris Dardanes at 141, Nick Dardanes at 149 and Scott Schiller at 197 — Minnesota's other No. 1 seeds — also advanced easily. All had first-round byes. Chris Dardanes won on a major decision in the second round, his brother Nick on a technical fall and Schiller on a pin.

Other Gophers reaching the quarterfinals were Jordan Kingsley at 125, David Thorn at 133, Dylan Ness at 157, Dan Zilverberg a 165, Logan Storley at 174 and Kevin Steinhaus at 184.

The Gophers starters were 15-0 in the first two-rounds, with seven falls and six major decisions. Of eight other Gophers entered, two reached the quarterfinals: Brett Pfarr at 184 and Michael Kroells at heavyweight.
