After beginning the season as an afterthought in New Orleans, Adrian Peterson showed he still has what it takes to be a workhorse just when the Arizona Cardinals needed it most.

Peterson carried a career-high 37 times for 159 yards to take pressure off backup quarterback Drew Stanton and lead the Cardinals to a 20-10 victory over the host San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

"That's the mind-set I've always had since I came into the league," Peterson said. "I'm going to wear those guys down and see if they can do it for four quarters. That's something they have to question themselves when it comes to the fourth quarter and I'm still coming in there."

The former Vikings star had 10 more carries in his third game with Arizona (4-4) than he had his four weeks combined with the Saints. He posted the most carries ever for an NFL player in his 30s and topped the 100-yard mark for the second time since being acquired in a trade last month.

"That's why they call him All Day, AD, because he can tote it all day," Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald said.

Peterson's running and Stanton's pair of first-half touchdown passes were enough to help Arizona bounce back from a 33-0 loss to the Rams before last week's bye.

The undermanned 49ers (0-9) extended the worst start in franchise history and have lost 23 of the past 24 games overall. Newly acquired quarterback of the future Jimmy Garoppolo was mostly a spectator as rookie C.J. Beathard got battered once again behind a patchwork line.

Carolina 20, Atlanta 17: Cam Newton ran for 86 yards and a touchdown and the host Panthers (6-3) stormed back from an early 10-point deficit vs. the Falcons (4-4). Carolina ran for 201 yards, including a career-high 66 and a TD from rookie Christian McCaffrey. Matt Ryan threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns and had one costly first-half interception for defending NFC champion Atlanta.

New Orleans 30, Tampa Bay 10: The Saints (6-2) extended their winning streak to six when Drew Brees went 22-for-27 for 263 yards and two TDs. Alvin Kamara scored on a 6-yard run and a 33-yard reception, thrilling the home crowd with a waving, tackle-slipping run after his short catch. The Buccaneers (2-6) lost their fifth in a row and were not just beaten but beaten up.

Texans fall short without Watson

Indinapolis 20, Houston 14: T.Y. Hilton had 175 yards receiving with two TDs, Jacoby Brissett threw for 308 yards and the Colts (3-6) halted a three-game skid by beating the host Texans (3-5), who struggled without injured Deshaun Watson. Tom Savage couldn't move the offense for most of the game but threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. The Texans had first-and-goal in the final minute, but Savage threw three incompletions and was sacked and fumbled on the game's final play.

Oakland 27, Miami 24: Derek Carr threw for 300 yards, Marshawn Lynch scored twice in his return from suspension and the Raiders (4-5) held off the host Dolphins (4-4). Carr went 21-for-30 with one touchdown, a 44-yarder to Johnny Holton, and one interception as Oakland won for only the second time since Week 2. Miami's Jay Cutler, back after missing one game because of cracked ribs, completed his first 16 passes and finished with 311 passing yards and three scores.

Jacksonville 23, Cincinnati 7: With A.J. Green and Jalen Ramsey ejected, Jaydon Mickens delivered the knockout blow by returning a punt 63 yards for a score as the Jaguars (5-3) won consecutive games for the first time in 13 months and won at home for the first time since December. Blake Bortles threw for 259 yards and a touchdown.

Tennessee 23, Baltimore 20: Marcus Mariota threw for 218 yards and two TDs, and the host Titans (5-3) held on for their third victory in a row. Tennessee scored 13 points off Kevin Byard's first of two interceptions and a shanked punt to stay atop the AFC South. The Ravens (4-5) enter their bye having lost three of four.

In this photo taken Monday, March 6, 2017, in San Francisco, released confidential files by The University of California of a sexual misconduct case, like this one against UC Santa Cruz Latin Studies professor Hector Perla is shown. Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible. Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
