It will be at least another month before St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood loses its supermarket.

The Midway Cub was going to close its doors at the end of this week. Shoppers learned about a change of plans from a note taped to a door inside the store.

“Cub will stay open to the public until 8/30/25,” the note read. “Items Currently on Clearance at 30% off, pricing reflected on the shelf. Clearance product will not be restocked.”

The notice was only slightly less direct than Cub’s announcement that it was closing the store in the first place.

The chain’s owners, Rhode Island-based United Natural Foods, last week alerted the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development that it would permanently close its store on University Avenue on Aug. 2 and lay off 96 employees starting Sept. 22.

In response to a request for more information, Cub Foods corporate headquarters in Stillwater placed the Minnesota Star Tribune on hold for seven minutes, then disconnected the call.

United Natural Foods issued this statement: “We anticipate the Cub Midway store will remain open to our customers until the end of August.”

The statement went on to say that the store’s pharmacy will close Aug. 2 and that all prescription files will be transferred to the Cub Pharmacy in Roseville at 1201 Larpenteur Av.
