Mount Rushmore National Memorial has long been a popular stop along road trips through America’s western national parks.

In recent years, the Memorial’s partners have elevated its visitor experience. So don’t miss out by simply passing through for a photo.

A revamped experience

Of course, Mount Rushmore remains as breathtaking as ever. It’s what’s around it that’s been transformed. To start, getting to Mount Rushmore is easier than ever thanks to touchless, streamlined parking options.

Contracting with Xanterra Travel Collection, Mount Rushmore National Memorial has also refreshed its food and beverage offerings to give visitors a truly unique experience.

With an updated restaurant, visitors can sample a variety of food and drinks. There, fare options range from modern all the way back to colonial — visitors can actually purchase ice cream inspired by the same recipe Thomas Jefferson brought back from a trip to France.

A trip to Mount Rushmore isn’t complete without trying the local offerings. Knetemann of Xanterra Travel Collection recommends any of the bison options for a true taste of the region.

Local food doesn’t just mean a more authentic experience, either. It also highlights Mount Rushmore’s commitment to sustainability.

And food isn’t the only way visitors can get a feel for the local culture. Xanterra has also worked with the National Park Service to update the retail options at Mount Rushmore.

Within the Memorial’s stores, visitors can check out a variety of gifts made by local vendors. Not only does that mean getting a keepsake that’s one-of-a-kind, but visitors can feel good about supporting the local economy.

“We take a lot of pride in working with local vendors or local artisans whenever we can. We try to have a positive impact on the local community,” Knetemann said.

Plus, Xanterra has helped Mount Rushmore invest in sustainability through the installation of solar panels, which power the Memorial’s facilities.

Making the most of your visit

Mount Rushmore is a popular stop on longer road trips, and for good reason. It’s a great opportunity for fresh air and excitement after long hours in the car.

But visitors can easily make a full day of their time at Mount Rushmore, too.

Knetemann recommends taking in different views of the Memorial by exploring the area’s hiking trails. And a tour of the Sculptor’s Studio will give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Mount Rushmore.

“It’s just a stunning place,” Knetemann says. “It’s a great place to get out, stretch your legs, take in the smell of the pines and just take a nice little relaxing break after being trapped in the car for a while.”
