Scene at the fair

A little fun with the seven fair day-vices

Our photographer framed the panorama of humanity that is the State Fair, keeping an eye out for pride, envy, gluttony, lust, wrath, greed and sloth — and keeping tongue firmly in cheek. Can you guess who's portraying what? A weary fairgoer who woke at 4:30 a.m. took a catnap on Dan Patch Avenue; a young wrangler with her Dorset ewe lamb glanced back at the competition; a toddler had had it with the Kidway; a family dug into a cookie bucket; a mom cried with joy after her daughter won a 4-H championship; two tweens staggered under their midway prizes.

SCROLL

LUST: Jean and Ronnie Reed of Oakdale, newlyweds who were married in July, danced at Dino’s Gyros at the Minnesota State Fair. The newlyweds knew each other growing up in Wisconsin but never spoke until connecting again recently through Facebook.
ENVY: Julia Quasp of McLeod County, center, who won second place, or Reserve Champion, in the Dorset Ewe Lamb class, glanced back at the Dorset Ewe Lamb Champion, or first place winner, shown by Dixie Dykhoff of East Otter Tail County, right, during the 4-H Sheep Show inside Compeer Arena at the Minnesota State Fair.
SLOTH: Clarence Maschke of Norwood Young America, who woke at 4:30 a.m. that morning, took a catnap on Dan Patch Avenue after lunchtime at the Minnesota State Fair.
GREED: Max Peters-Hebert, left, 12, and Lincoln McCandless, 11, both of Fridley, carried their haul of stuffed animals from the Mighty Midway to the car at the Minnesota State Fair.
WRATH: Olivia Nguyen, 2, of Minneapolis let out some anger and frustration while at the Kidway at the Minnesota State Fair.
SLOTH: Fairgoers took the sky glider rather than walking across the fairgrounds at the Minnesota State Fair.
GLUTTONY: Mike and Crystal Vagts of Eau Claire, Wis., with the help of their one-year-son Rusty, tried to eat enough cookies to close one of the two buckets of Sweet Martha’s chocolate chip cookies they purchased at the Minnesota State Fair. One bucket was to eat for themselves, and one was to bring home to co-workers.
PRIDE: Kristen Wasmoen of Albert Lea cried with joy and hugged her daughter Elizabeth Wasmoen after Elizabeth was chosen as Grand Champion in the Market Beef category during the 4-H Beef Championship Event in the Warner Coliseum at the Minnesota State Fair.
PRIDE: Dominion Dance Company of Minneapolis competed in the teen division of the Amateur Talent Contest at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell Stage at the Minnesota State Fair.
PRIDE: Anna Euerle, the 2021 Princess Kay of the Milky Way, looked on as butter sculptor Linda Christensen worked on a butter sculpture of Euerle’s likeness in the Dairy Barn at the Minnesota State Fair.
GLUTTONY: Caden Hu, 3, of Los Angeles, who is in Minnesota visiting family, enjoyed an ice cream cone at the Minnesota State Fair.
