Feb. 28 at First Avenue. It starts with an early show with the Hives and the Donnas, then culminates with a late show in the Entry with the Black Lips. A triple-header well worth the long night. Plus nobody should have to work the next day; Leap Day isn't a real day.
A half-dozen cool things in music
Bob Mould interview, Spin magazine. Very candid piece. He touches on everything from his current solo work to his time in Hüsker Dü, why he lives in Washington, D.C., and how he ended up writing scripts a few years back for pro wrestling. A great read.
Rocklahoma 2008, July 10-13. It'll be four days in a 108-degree field near Tulsa watching the remains of every '80s hair metal band still able to stand. But after two straight Lollapalooza festivals in Chicago, I'm ready for the polar opposite.
STEVE ROOD, PRIOR LAKE
Erykah Badu, "Honey" video. The scenario is a face-unseen woman flipping through used vinyl at a record store, and Badu's face appears on classic LP covers of the Ohio Players, Minnie Riperton and the Beatles, among others. Plus, she turns up doing an in-store performance as Debbie Gibson. The visuals are so riveting that I didn't even pay attention to the song.
The Whigs, "Late Show With David Letterman." The hoodie-wearing trio played loud college rock with the kind of unbridled spirit and passion that made me wanna see them Feb. 12 at the Varsity.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, "CMT Crossroads." They pull out the Zeppelin: "Black Dog" as a banjo-flavored duet, buoyed by Marc Ribot's eerie guitar, and Krauss on a banjo-and-fiddle treatment of "When the Levee Breaks." But the stuff from their outstanding album, "Raising Sand," stands out, too, especially the sweet "Stick With Me Baby." Premieres Feb. 11.
