A closer look at the Gophers' three freshmen:

Amir Coffey

No. 5 • G • 6-8, 195 pounds

Thursday's exhibition: He led the Gophers in minutes (33) and assists (five) to go along with six points and six rebounds.

At Hopkins: Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year and Minnesota Mr. Basketball his senior season. Led the Royals to the Class 4A state title. Is the highest-rated prospect to join the Gophers since Kris Humphries in 2003.

Eric Curry

No. 24 • F • 6-9, 235 pounds

Thursday's exhibition: The best player on the floor at times, getting a double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds) in 27 minutes off the bench.

At Southwest Christian Academy (Little Rock, Ark.): Rated as a top-100 player, Curry averaged 15 points and eight rebounds as a senior.

Michael Hurt

No. 42 • F • 6-7, 200 pounds

Thursday's exhibition: His two three-pointers, in 17 minutes of play, led the team.

At Rochester John Marshall: He was Minnesota Mr. Basketball runner-up to Coffey, and all-conference his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. First-team all-state last season when he averaged 19.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 7.9 assists, finishing as the Rockets' career leading scorer.
