THE PROBLEM Drab living room needed drama to match its owners, a stand-up comic and a rapper.

THE SOLUTION Give the room a retro-Rat Pack feel with a modern edge.

HOW IT HAPPENED • Chose color scheme of black, white and red with silver accents. • Contrasted silk, patent leather and nubby upholstery with bold prints. • Covered fireplace hearth and mantel with ebony quartz, added stainless-steel tiles.

• Visually expanded wall with silver and pearl horizontal stripes.

• Flanked fireplace with lights that shine out horizontally on the striped wall.

BEST TRICK Built out wall above fireplace for flat-screen TV; installed barely noticeable speakers in ceiling.

With vivid colors, funky fabrics, a fantastic focal point and some out-of-this-world lighting, this room is now modern, sleek and sophisticated.
