It's easy to exaggerate the import of round-numbered anniversaries. But it's hardly possible to overstate the significance of Johann Sebastian Bach, who, born on the vernal equinox in 1685, turns 325 next Sunday. Musicians from Minnesota and beyond are conspiring to mark the event.

One disappointment: a March 22 recital by Julia Fischer has been canceled, as has the German violinist's entire North American tour.

Some highlights:

Tuesday Launching the festivities, the Schubert Club presents the Neuss Chamber Orchestra, from St. Paul's German sister city. Joachim Neugart leads Cantata No. 84 (with soprano Kim Sueoka) and a concerto for oboe d'amore (with soloist Stefanie Sassenrath).

7:30 p.m., Sundin Hall, Hamline University, 1531 Hewitt Av., St. Paul. $12-$20. 651-292-3268.

Thursday A birthday bash at the Dakota Jazz Club offers sets by the Bach Society of Minnesota, the cello-percussion ensemble Jelloslave and avant-cellist Matt Haimovitz.

7 p.m., 1010 Nicollet Mall, Mpls. $25-$30. 612-332-1010 or dakotacooks.com.

Saturday Capping a full day of free organ concerts at five Minneapolis locations is a performance of the great Magnificat in D by the St. Mark's Cathedral Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Raymond Johnston.
