61 U of M student-athletes named academic all-Big Ten

Sometimes people forget Gophers athletes are students. So this is a reminder: 61 fall athletes were honored for their classroom work. This post is one of those infrequent non-hockey items worth noting someplace, so why not here.

A slightly edited University of Minnesota news release:

A total of 61 University of Minnesota student-athletes have earned spots on the Big Ten's fall 2009 Academic All-Big Ten teams. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. Minnesota's fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball. Football boasted 22 members on the all-academic team, including seven student-athletes who earned the academic honor for the third time. First team All-Big Ten wide receiver Eric Decker, the Gophers' all-time leader in both career receptions (227) and receiving yards (3,119), headlined the list that also included honorable mention All-Big Ten selections Lee Campbell and Nick Tow-Arnett. Men's cross country had five student-athletes named to the all-academic team, lead by second team All-Big Ten and All-Region performer senior Matt Barrett. Senior Megan Duwell, a first team All-American who recently posted the best finish by a Gopher in school history at the cross country national championships by finishing seventh, was among 14 on the women's cross country all-academic team. Women's soccer had 13 student-athletes earning all-academic honors, including first team All-Big Ten defender Jennie Clark, a junior. The women's volleyball team was also well represented with seven players receiving spots on the all-academic team, including first team All-Big Ten performer middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer, a junior, and senior libero Christine Tan, an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick.
